The topic will allow an exploration of the agricultural economy in Myanmar in the wake of the military takeover on 1 February, including the question of the 2021 harvest and the prospect of food shortages, high prices and potentially similar conditions to those which saw the ouster of Ne Win’s government in 1988.
Anonymous – the first speaker has asked that his identity be hidden. He is very well qualified to speak to this topic but considers he would be at serious risk if he could be identified.
Dr Htwe Htwe Thein is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University in Perth. She is internationally known for her work on business and the economy in Myanmar and has co-authored numerous publications on business topics. She is also well-known as a commentator on the Myanmar economy and developments since the military takeover on 1 February 2021.
A question and answer session will be conducted after the presentation. For more information about AMI, please visit: aummi.edu.au/.
***NOTE: Zoom can work very well, but it poses difficulties for people with a poor internet connection. So, people from Myanmar (or elsewhere) who might have a poor internet connection or low bandwidth should turn off the video mode and listen to the seminar. You may be able to switch on the video from time to time just to see who is speaking, but definitely don’t use the video mode if you wish to speak yourself. You can also pose questions using the chat function. AMI will upload the whole seminar later on the AMI website and Facebook page.
