We are honoured by the readiness of Prof Sean Turnell to speak at this seminar. He is a member of AMI’s special advisory group and he has unequalled knowledge of the Myanmar economy and what will be needed to restore its vitality after two years of destruction by the military junta’s actions.
Sean is an Australian economist and former economic policy advisor to State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Lowy Institute, a former staff member of the Reserve Bank of Australia, and a past director of research at the Myanmar Development Institute. In 2009, the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies published his book on key periods in the history of Myanmar’s financial sector, Fiery Dragons: Banks, Moneylenders and Microfinance in Burma.
Sean was detained in Myanmar between February 2021 and November 2022 for 650 days, charged and later convicted in a sham trial with breaching the Myanmar Official Secrets Act while working in an advisory capacity to the State Counsellor. His book detailing this experience, An Unlikely Prisoner, was published by Penguin. This has now been joined by The Best Laid Plans, which takes up the story of economic reform in Myanmar under the civilian government, 2016-2021.
Questions and Answers will follow the presentations.
