Muslims in Myanmar have long faced systemic marginalization, but during the failed democratic transition (2010–2021), discrimination, violence, and state-led atrocities intensified—most notably the Rohingya crisis. Following the Spring Revolution, new political ideas have emerged, creating opportunities to rethink inclusion within a future federal democracy. However, the politics of
belonging remain highly contested.
This talk examines the changing dynamics of inclusion and exclusion of Muslim communities in Myanmar, their participation in the ongoing revolutionary movement, and the broader challenges involved in building an inclusive political future. As the military junta moves toward a planned
election—often scapegoating Muslims, as seen in previous regimes—this presentation will also evaluate the current situation of Muslim minorities, the complexities of the Rakhine-Rohingya
tensions, and the opportunities and risks ahead for creating an inclusive nation.
Aung Ko Ko is the Executive Director of Mosaic Myanmar, a leading civil society organization dedicated to fostering
