Michael Sainsbury is a freelance journalist based in Asia with more than 20 years’ experience writing about business, politics and human rights across Australia and the Asia Pacific region.  He is best known in the Myanmar and Rakhine contexts for his writing for a wide range of political and opinion news websites including crikey.com.au in Australia.

Dr Anthony Ware is a Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at Deakin University, Melbourne. He was Director of the Australia Myanmar Institute from 2013-2017, and has previously lectured at The University of Melbourne. His research focus is on international development in conflict-affected situations, and the relationship between everyday peacebuilding and community-led local development, particularly in Myanmar. More broadly, his research revolves around the impact of sociopolitical factors on participatory development, and thus he has also worked on issues such as Myanmar’s previous sanctions regime, fragile states, democratic transition, the role of faith and faith-based organisations in development, and theoretical and case study evaluations of development in difficult sociopolitical contexts. He has published more than two dozen academic papers/chapters, and four books, including, with Costas Laoutides, Myanmar’s ‘Rohingya’ Conflict (Hurst 2018).

Dr Costas Laoutides is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations, Deakin University. He is a political scientist with expertise in international conflict analysis and resolution. His focus is on internal armed conflicts and examines both the causes which trigger collective violence and methods of conflict resolution and peace-building.  He is also widely published.

A question and answer session will be conducted after the talk.
