Associate professor Susie Costello teaches Social Work in the School of Global, Urban and Social Sciences at RMIT University. She is chairperson of the RMIT Myanmar Interest Group and a member of the Refugee Tertiary Education Committee that established online tertiary scholarships for refugees from Myanmar. Susie conducted her PhD research whilst living on the Thai Burma border in 2007 where, in consultation with refugees from Burma, she developed and taught the current social work curriculum for health and community workers at the Mae Tao Clinic. Between 2006 and 2008 Susie worked as a consultant with UNICEF Child Protection Yangon, the Department of Social Welfare, and the University of Yangon to develop a Graduate Diploma in Social Work in Myanmar and the beginning of a Child Protection system. Susie led RMIT student Study tours to the Thai Burma border from 2007 to 2010 and in 2016, in partnership with Action Aid Myanmar, to Myanmar. The visit combined her current research exploring the contributions of Yangon University social work staff, graduates and other qualified social workers to the democratic processes in Myanmar. Susie will take a group of RMIT students to Myanmar and the AMI Conference in Yangon in January 2020.
